Dental caries is defined as a tooth decay which leads to damage of the tooth structure either a part of the tooth or the whole tooth.
This can lead to many conditions such as severe pain in the tooth, tooth loss, tooth infection, and finally can lead to death. Dental caries can occur mainly due to improper food intake, and diet changes.
It is one of the most common dental diseases and problems that occur in the whole world.
There are a few bacteria that produce some acids from foods that contain carbohydrates like glucose, sucrose etc. These acids have low pH and so the sensitive parts of the tooth get decayed due to the acidic nature of the products. There are a few ways to prevent dental caries, like maintaining proper oral hygiene.
There is a radiographic classification of dental caries, where it is classified into 4 following classes:
Incipient Interproximal Caries - Less than half the thickness of the enamel layer.
Moderate Interproximal Caries - More than half the thickness of the enamel, and does not involve the dentino-enamel junction.
Advanced Interproximal Caries - Involves the dentino-enamel junction and the enamel. Less than half the distance to the pulp cavity.
Severe Interproximal Caries - Dentin penetrated to more than half of the pulp cavity.
