This is a small bundle of filaments that are made up of plastic or nylon, which is used generally to clean the teeth and the gaps between the teeth. This is scrapped between the teeth to remove any remaining food or bacteria particles that might be left after a meal.
Dental floss was first discovered by Levi Spear Parmly, a dentist from the United States. And since then, dental floss has been one of the major tooth cleaning techniques apart from brushing of the tooth.
Floss is supplied in lengths of few meters and can be cut after a desired length is pulled out. Then it is held between the fingers very firmly, and then tension is applied to pull the floss between the teeth and oral structures. To hold the grip of the floss, it is to be wrapped around 1 or 2 fingers. It should be done very gently when passing near the gums, and the direction of flossing should not be towards the gums, as it might damage the gums and oral tissues. Two things are cleaned by using a dental floss - Food struck between the teeth, and the dental plague due to the bacteria.
According to the American Dental Association, dental flossing is adviced once or twice a day, and people are not to be addicted to it. Excess flossing can lead to the damage to the oral tissues.
A few conditions like gum disease, halitosis, and dental caries can be prevented when toothbrushing is accompanied with dental flossing.
