Root canal treatment is a kind of treatment done in the pulp region of the tooth, and it does not involve the surface treatment. The components of the pulp region of the tooth are arteries, veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue along with a nerve.

The pulp region is present in the center of the tooth, and it has the nerve.
Root canal treatment is done when there is any infection occured below the teeth region. And for the treatment, the upper layers are drilled and the contents of the damaged pulp are removed out. By this, the root canal is emptied. After the cavity is emptied, inert material is placed in it and is sealed.

Normally, the filling materials used are gutta-percha, a thermoplastic polymer of isoprene, which is melted and injected to fill the root canal passages. Along with the isoprene, barium is also used which helps during taking of X-rays, as the material becomes radio-opaque.
Before the treatment, Lidocaine anaesthetic is used so that the patient feels no pain when the tooth is drilled and pulp contents are removed out of the root canal.

Sometimes the dentists performs a treatment called pulpectomy where the pulp contents are removed, and then temporary filling materials are placed in it. This process is normally done on deciduous teeth.
After the root canal treatment is done, the pulp canal is covered with a crown. The root canal treated tooth has to be covered well as it can get damaged more easily, because there is no nourishment due to lack of tissues in the inner parts.
