 Anesthesia also called as anaesthesia is defined as a temporary loss of sensation of pain, or any other emotional sensation, and it is administered before a surgical practice.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr was the first person to use this name, which is a greek word literally meaning "Without Sensation".

Anesthesia can be of various conditions such as Analgesia, Hypnosis, Amnesia, Relaxation etc. There are several ways by which anesthesia can be given -
- General Anesthesia
- Deep sedation, also called as Analgesia
- Moderate sedation
- Minimal sedation, also called Anxiolysis

A few local anesthetics include procaine, amethocaine, cocaine, lidocaine, prilocaine etc.
Local anesthetics work on prevention of nerve impulse transmission without causing unconsciousness.
