Currently viewing the definition of: Pulp Capping

Pulp capping is a process of placing a specialized agent in contact with or in close proximity to the pulp with the encouraged formation of a new dentin, called as secondary dentin, and promote the healing of the pulp.
When a pulp capping agent is applied, the exposure of pulpal tissues after a root canal treatment is avoided. Calcium hydroxide cement is an example for pulp capping agent.

Types - Direct and indirect capping.

Direct pulp capping is done by placing the capping agent directly on the exposed pulp. Usually happens during the following conditions -
- Traumatic fractures of the tooth
- Excavation of deep carious lesions when the pulp is exposed accidentally
- Iatrogenic exposure during cavity/crown preparation

Indirect pulp capping is done when secondary dentin formation is induced when the pulp is not completely exposed. And indirect pulp capping occurs by secondary dentin formation on the dentinal wall with the region of near exposure.
